Key developments
Operations Lion’s Roar and Epic Fury
On Saturday morning, 28 February 2026, Israel time, the US Operation Epic Fury and Israeli Operation Lion’s Roar began coordinated aerial bombing strikes against Iranian military targets, focusing initially on Iranian missile, air, naval and command infrastructure.
The strikes followed the collapse of recent US-Iran negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program. Despite the US and Israel striking nuclear facilities during the June 2025 12-day war, satellite imagery has confirmed the preservation of Iran’s nuclear weapons program. As documented by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran’s program includes enrichment of uranium for weaponisation, which is illegal under the weapons non-proliferation regime.
Iran has not hidden its intention to annihilate the Jewish State. Persistent eliminationist rhetoric towards Israel, alongside its efforts to build a vast ballistic missile arsenal (including missile purchases from China) and support for its proxies, especially Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthis, demonstrate the genocidal goal behind its nuclear ambitions.
Iran’s human rights abuses, including recent violent repression of protests, during which thousands of protesters were killed, and ongoing suppression of ethnic and religious minorities, have also escalated international concerns.
Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz and strikes on neighbouring non-belligerent states are also acts of aggression that broaden military confrontation. The war has spread across the fragile Middle East region. The UN Security Council adopted UNSC Resolution 2817 (2026) condemning Iran’s “egregious attacks” against Jordan and Arab Gulf states (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates) “in the strongest terms”.
