Key developments
Israel recognises Somaliland statehood

On 26 December 2025, the State of Israel became the first country to formally recognise Somaliland as a sovereign state. This recognition followed more than three decades of Somaliland having operated in diplomatic isolation, although a self-governing political entity distinct from Somalia.

Israel’s recognition of Somaliland opens doors to cooperation in diplomacy, security, and economic sectors. It also provides Israel strategic access to the Gulf of Aden/Red Sea corridor, while empowering stable regional actors who reject radical Islamic extremism. It constitutes an expansion of Israel’s alliances in the Horn of Africa, complementing the Abraham Accords’ strategic vision.

On 29 December 2025, the UN Security Council convened a meeting 10084 SC/1627 to discuss Israel’s recognition of Somaliland. More than 20 Middle Eastern and African states, including Somalia, Egypt, Jordan, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye condemned the recognition, citing concerns about regional stability and Somalia’s territorial integrity.

The recognition has been criticised by some as illegal under international law. To the contrary, such opposition exposes the UN’s inability to make sound decisions based on international law.
